Hyophorbe lagenicaulis Bottle Palm Tropical Arecaceae
The Bottle Palm is native to the Mauritius Islands and endemic to Round Island. It naturally occupies sandy soils of upland forests and coastal savannas.
This unique and interesting bulbous palm has a single trunk that will grow slowly up to 10-20 ft tall, about 2 ft in diameter with ring scars and a green crownshaft at the top. The gray, self-cleaning trunk has a distinguished bottle shape, hence the name Bottle Palm. The Bottle Palm produces stunning white flowers that develop into ornamental black seeds when ripe.
Hyophorbe lagenicaulis prospers in full sunlight if given enough water and is also an outstanding indoor/outdoor container specimen. It tolerates and looks its best in moderate shade and filtered light.
The Bottle Palm is an elegant must-have that is easy to maintain and will add a distinctive element to your landscape.
Native to Mauritius, it is called a bottle palm in a mistaken understanding that the bulging trunk is used to store water. This palm is not frost-hardy so here in the UK it is used as a very attractive house or conservatory plant.

Germination Guide
- Light scarify a part of the seed surface with a nail file or similar
- Soak the seeds in a cup warm water.
- Keep the cup in a warm pace eg on a radiator or in airing cupboard etc for 24 hours
- Wash in clean water
- Prepare a compost mix - Ideally a mix of 50% regular compost, 50% vermiculite
- Place mix in suitable bowl and microwave on full power for 2 minutes to kill and fungi/bacteria
- All soil mix to cool naturally
- Place mix into clean seed trays or pots
- Plant seeds so that about a third of the seed is visible out the top of the compost mix
- Humidify the soil but do not over water to prevent mould.
- Keep warm in a warm place 20-29c in a light place but out of direct sunlight.
