Description: Native is Trachycarpus fortunei from the Himalayas in northern India to northern Thailand and China. The trunk grows upright and is about 10m high, sometimes more. This beautiful and fast growing palm surrounded by dense hair fibers on its trunk. This strain is very resistant to cold and can withstand even snow and frost.

The palm grows even in the snowy Himalayas to 2400 meters altitude.

Germination Instructions

Sow indoors immediately. Prior to sowing soak seed in warm water for 2-3 days. Change water every day. Drain. Mix seeds with some moist growing medium,  perlite, vermiculite or coir are ideal although seed compost is also fine. Place seeds and medium in a zip lock style freezer bag, seal to maintain moisture. Ideal temp 12-20°C.(room temp.). Germination takes 2-3 months approx. Any germinated seeds can be removed and potted up into 8cm deep pots. Grow on indoors. Water only when dry. Only plant out when well grown in warm weather.

Growing Instructions

This is a tropical plant. Prefers any fertile, well-drained soil in full or partial sun, dappled shade is ideal. Prefers a warm, sheltered garden away from cold winds. Can be grown as a conservatory Palm or in a greenhouse. If grown outside it will require some protection during cold winters. Almost fully hardy, mature plants can withstand -15 to -20°C.

No pruning required. Requires little attention. Propagate by seed.

- Family: Palm plants (Arecaceae)- Subfamily: coryphoideae- Common name: Chinese windmill palm- Group of plants: Palm- Origin: China and Burma- Distribution: Himalayas, northern India to northern Thailand, China.- Habit: It is a small to medium-high fan palm, up to 12 m is highly aged.- Leaves: The crown is made up of up to 50 sheets or more, each 90 cm wide, together.Flowers: This palm is dioecious and hermaphrodite rare.Male inflorescences are conspicuously colored yellow.Female inflorescences are light green and less densely covered with flowers.Fruits: The ripe fruits are blue, kidney-shaped, smooth berries.- Propagation: by seeds.- Location: sun, bright, sheltered- Casting / fertilizing: watering pretty well in summer and winter, the watering Stark reduce. avoid waterlogging!Fertilize 1 time per year with a slow release fertilizer.- Winter: Up to -17 degrees frost hardy. The Palm better only from the 3rd to 4th year design plants.

On the optimal location, making leaves per year 6 to 8. Expect a first flower formation, when the master level has reached 80-100 cm, and the Palm is about 10 years old.
